Excellence in Teaching
THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY
The RU Chinese Teacher Training Initiative targets perspective teachers of Chinese on a case by case basis and will recommend according to individual needs either the traditional or alternate route of teacher training. The objective is to increase the number of quality teachers teaching Chinese in the K-12 field to meet increasingly growing demands for Chinese language classes in New Jersey public schools.
Traditional Teacher Training
The Graduate School of Education has traditionally trained fully certified teachers of Chinese through its Certification Program in Foreign Language Education and its Five Year K-12 Foreign Language Education Program for undergraduate students at Rutgers University. Upon graduation, students in both programs receive an Ed.M. and full New Jersey State Certification to teach Chinese at the K-12 level.
Alternate Route Teacher Training
To provide prospective teachers with an alternate route to achieve K-12 certification, The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, the Graduate School of Education, and the World Languages Institute have collaborated to offer professional development opportunities.
Prospective teachers may
1.Apply to the M.A.T. for Teachers of Chinese program offered through The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures to receive the necessary 30 credit hours of Chinese for certification.
2.Apply to the Accelerated Chinese Teacher Training Program at the World Languages Institutes for the necessary coursework to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (CE).
3.Apply to the The Non-Degree Teacher of Chinese Certification Program offered by the Graduate School of Education for the required coursework mandated by the New Jersey Professional Teaching Standards that will cover the necessary professional development requirements needed beyond the CE.
